This past year offered a once-in-a-lifetime
opportunity to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Alta Bates
Summit Medical Center and to honor its heritage hospitals: Alta
Bates, Herrick, Merritt, Peralta, and Providence.
In January, the medical center
published a beautiful coffee table book, A Century of Caring: A
Pictorial History of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center, chronicling
our history and hallmarks. Over the course of the year, community
members joined in our celebrations, which included the Golden State
Warriors and Oakland A’s.
In perfect costumes, “Alta and Sam”—historic
founders Alta Bates and Dr. Samuel Merritt—appeared at all
events, and even threw out the first pitch during an A’s
game!
Employees were honored in a centennial picnic
during Hospital Week, and participated in a year-long medical center
history trivia contest. A beautiful retrospective exhibit, including
memorabilia from all five hospitals, was on display throughout
the year. The medical center also held a Centennial Gala event,
in which attendees shared a memorable evening honoring the hospital’s history.
Berkeley artist David Lance Goines created a striking commemorative
poster in honor of the centennial.
The year will wrap up with the hanging of a beautiful centennial
quilt, created by employees from more than 30 departments. This
quilt will remain at the medical center as a reminder of this
historic milestone.
