November 20, 2006, DCP Takes Home Three Pearl Awards, Including Gold for dcpubs.com
DCP was honored with three 2006 Pearl Awards. Hosted by the Custom Publishing Council (CPC), the Pearl Awards salute the best in custom publishing. Ninety awards were presented in 30 categories at the third annual Pearl Awards on November 16 at the University Club in New York City.
DCP won Pearl awards for excellence in graphic design, editorial content and overall excellence in website design. The specific awards are:
o Athletics Magazine—the official magazine of the Oakland Athletics won a Silver Pearl for Editorial/Best Special Feature
o Buzz—a custom publication for Comcast Corporation won a Bronze Pearl for Design/Best New Publication/Newsletter
o dcpubs.com—DCP’s website won a Gold Pearl for Design/Best New Publication/Web
“Considering the superior quality of the entries, we are extremely honored to win these three Pearl awards,” says Jim Offel, General Manager at DCP and member of the CPC Executive Board. “We’re particularly proud to be acknowledged in three distinct areas—editorial, design, and website development. We believe that these Pearl awards demonstrate the breadth of DCP’s expertise.”
A team of 27 judges in three locations worked hard to identify publications demonstrating the best in strategy, design and editorial. The editorial and design award categories focus on the best new, ongoing, and improved publications, while the strategy categories look at how well the publications complement the sponsoring organization’s integrated marketing campaigns, how well they achieve the organization’s goals, how they prove a return on investment, and what type of distribution strategy they employ.
All custom publishing companies, including independent custom publishers, divisions of larger publishing houses, advertising agencies, and other media conglomerates—whether or not they were currently members of the CPC—were invited to enter the competition. Judges were key marketing executives, academics, journalists, designers, corporate strategists, and publishers.

October 11, 2006, Custom Publishing is Expanding Dramatically According to 2006 Forecast from Veronis Suhler Stevenson (VSS)
DCP announces the recent findings of Veronis Suhler Stevenson’s (VSS) 2006 Forecast. According to the 20th edition of the nation’s leading media spending and forecast series, custom publishing is one of the fastest growing marketing segments.
Below are excerpts from a September 12, 2006 press release published by VSS, a leading private equity and mezzanine capital fund management company dedicated to investing in the media, communications, information and education industries in North America and Europe.
o Spending on custom publishing increased 29.1 percent to $28.41 billion in 2005, driven by double-digit growth in spending on magazines, newsletters and tabloids.
o Spending on custom publishing is expanding dramatically because of the medium's ability to connect a company with its target audience on a regular basis, maintaining the company's visibility.
o Custom publishing rose at a CAGR of 17.0 percent from 2000 to 2005.
o Driven by new publications in a variety of formats, spending on custom publishing is expected to increase 22.1 percent to $34.69 billion in 2006 and grow at a CAGR of 15.4 percent during the forecast period. Spending will reach $58.22 billion by 2010.
o Total spending on media and communications is expected to rise 7.2 percent in 2006 to $961.90 billion, following a 6.3 percent gain in 2005, posting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6 percent in the 2005-2010 period, reaching $1.236 trillion, according to the Communications Industry Forecast 2006-2010.
o Marketing services was the largest and fastest growing communications sector in 2005, growing 9.1 percent to $309.93 billion, and is expected to rise at a five-year CAGR of 8.0 percent to $455.72 billion in 2010, fueled by growth in direct response media, event marketing and custom publishing.
To view the complete press release, visit the following page on the VSS website: http://www.vss.com/articles/articles_2006/article_091206.htm.
“While there is a shift in spending from conventional media to new media strategies, our research indicates that traditional media companies are aggressively pursuing online and mobile platforms, protecting their brands and developing new revenue streams,” said James Rutherfurd, executive vice president and managing director at VSS.
“Those of us immersed in the custom publishing industry are well aware of its rapid growth and burgeoning acceptance among marketing executives,” says Jim Offel, general manager at DCP and member of the Custom Publishing Council executive board. “Even so, it is very encouraging and rewarding to receive confirmation of this phenomenon from the experts at VSS. And it’s particularly interesting to quantify how much faster custom publishing is growing compared to other marketing segments.”
